without the need of genetic engineering?
As many of you know, I’m a big fan of the Jurassic Park and Jurassic World books and movie series. In fact, I like all movies that are based on science. This is especially true with the Jurassic series. I think is has to do with the creation of new life, in this case, the recreation of prehistoric dinosaurs. I like that it talks about genetic technology, such as genetic engineering, genetic modification and the use of recombinant DNA. As a breeder, I eat this stuff up!
Is it fantasy to recreate dinosaurs? It so happens that scientist are actually in the process of recreating dinosaurs by modifying the chicken genome, not by modifying or adding genes, but by turning on and off genetic triggers. So far, they have been able to recreate chickens with scales, an actual tail, and they have even created chickens expressing teeth. These are traits or genes that already exist within the chicken genome.
As I watch these movies, and I see what scientist are able to accomplish through modern technology and evolutionary biology. I can’t help but wonder what it would be like to genetically engineer the perfect bird, and be able to clone them when needed?
Although we are not able to genetically engineer our fowl, or modify their DNA to create the perfect strain, nor do we have at our disposal the ability to clone them as needed, we do have methods for creating a family of fowl that matches the ideals we carry within our imaginations. We can turn a flock of mongrels into a uniformed and consistent strain. We can shape and mold that strain into any form we like. We can even dictate their purpose and the level and intensity of their function. The question is, can we create the perfect bird? The answer is – Almost!
As a backyard breeder, we have at our finger tips breeding principles and practices, which have been handed down to us through generations of breeders, those who have learned through trial and error the fastest and easiest methods for creating a true strain, one that meets our ideals of the perfect bird. This knowledge is priceless.
Knowing that, why do so many breeders fail to improve their strains, or create strains that best represent their breed? Most breeders are still trying to reinvent the wheel or they continue to experiment and never reach their goals or expectations. So many breeders have given up, and either rely on old wives tales, or they use crossbreeding as their main method of breeding.
I’m telling you, there is a better way, and it’s not as difficult as you may think.
This is why I created the Breeders Academy. Years ago, I too was stumbling in the dark. It wasn’t until I found the right mentors that I learned the value of breeding and perpetuating a pure strain. I get a lot of satisfaction in the fact my fowl are bred and raised throughout the world, but I get even more satisfaction through helping others learn how to create their own great strains.
